GridBit in Action: Smart Street Lighting Management Across Bulgarian Municipalities

  • Post category:News / Projects

Over the past several years, ADD Bulgaria has progressively expanded the deployment of GridBit, our smart street lighting management platform, across municipalities of different sizes and with different infrastructure requirements. These projects demonstrate how existing street lighting infrastructure can be upgraded with remote monitoring and control, automated operating schedules, electrical measurements and timely alarms.

This scale provides valuable practical experience in digitalizing street lighting systems of different sizes and structures and allows us to continuously develop the platform based on the real operational needs of infrastructure operators and technical teams.

From Traditional Street Lighting to Intelligent Infrastructure

Street lighting is highly distributed infrastructure, often consisting of hundreds or thousands of lighting cabinets and lighting assets. Without centralized management, operators have limited visibility into equipment status, and many problems are discovered only after a public report or an on-site inspection.

GridBit Street Lighting Management connects street lighting cabinets to a centralized software platform, providing operators with the information and tools needed to manage infrastructure remotely.

The solution combines centralized software with intelligent field devices developed by ADD Bulgaria. These devices measure electrical parameters, monitor components inside the cabinet, execute control commands and transmit operational data to the GridBit platform. The system can retrofit existing infrastructure and can be adapted to the technical requirements of different sites.

What GridBit Provides

Through a single centralized interface, operators can monitor and manage distributed street lighting infrastructure.

GridBit provides remote visibility into equipment status and electrical parameters, allowing operators to monitor the performance of each lighting cabinet. Historical data and charts support analysis of energy consumption and system behavior over time.

Lighting operations can be automated through configurable schedules based on sunrise and sunset, predefined time periods, calendars or specific operational requirements. Operators can also send remote commands when manual intervention is required.

The platform generates alarms for deviations and unusual events, helping teams identify potential problems faster and direct maintenance activities to the locations that require attention.

Reports and historical data support energy analysis, maintenance planning and more informed operational decision-making.

More Efficient Maintenance of Distributed Infrastructure

One of the key benefits of digitalization is the transition from reactive maintenance toward more informed and proactive operations.

Instead of dispatching a technician as the first step following every reported issue, operators can first review cabinet status, electrical measurements and recorded events remotely. This improves the planning of field interventions and helps maintenance teams identify the likely source of a problem before visiting the site.

Automated operating schedules and remote control further reduce the need for routine manual intervention, while energy monitoring provides a reliable basis for consumption analysis and optimization.

Modernizing Existing Infrastructure

For municipalities, street lighting modernization does not necessarily require replacing the entire existing infrastructure.

GridBit has been designed to retrofit existing street lighting cabinets and installations, adding connectivity, measurement, automation and centralized management. This makes it possible to implement digitalization gradually and according to the technical and financial requirements of each project.

The solution architecture also supports integration with different field devices and external systems, providing a scalable foundation for future smart city initiatives.

From Individual Projects to a Solution Proven at Scale

Experience across multiple deployments is particularly important for solutions used in urban infrastructure. Municipalities differ in cabinet design, electrical architecture, communications environments, maintenance processes and operational requirements.

With deployments across more than 5,000 lighting cabinets, over 80 municipalities and hundreds of settlements, GridBit has evolved into a solution that has been tested and refined in real operational environments and across a wide range of infrastructure scenarios.

Working across numerous projects has helped us develop GridBit not only as software, but as an integrated solution combining field devices, connectivity, centralized software, implementation and long-term technical support.

The experience gained from these deployments continuously feeds into the development of the platform, new functionality and better tools for monitoring, analyzing and managing distributed infrastructure.

Long-Term Support Beyond Deployment

For ADD Bulgaria, a project does not end when the equipment is installed and commissioned.

Long-term technical support, continuous software development, user training and adaptation to new operational requirements are an integral part of how we develop GridBit. This is particularly important for infrastructure operators because street lighting systems remain in operation for many years and need to evolve together with the requirements of the cities and municipalities they serve.

Our goal is to use digital technology to transform traditionally passive infrastructure into a reliable source of operational data and a tool for better infrastructure management.
